Mathematical Literacy
Mathematical literacy provides students with skills to navigate through the numerical world. This subject provides skills such as reasoning, problem-solving, resource management, and technological proficiency. If you enjoy these elements and a good challenge, then Mathematical Literacy could be the perfect subject for you!
To pass mathematical literacy, you need to achieve a final mark of 40% or higher. This mark consists of two parts: an exam mark contributing to 75% of your final mark and a Subject-Based Assessment (SBA) mark contributing to the remaining 25%.

- 2.8 Taxation
- 3.1 Maps
- 3.2 Models
- 3.3 Optimal Packing or Fitting-In Objects
- 3.4 Plans
- 4.1 Conversions
- 4.2 Perimeter, Area, Surface Area and Volume
- 4.3 Time
- 5.1 Probability
The Exam
All content taught will be divided into two papers which are worth 150 marks each and last for three hours.
- Paper 1 examines the following topics: Finance, Data, and Probability.
- Paper 2 examines the following topics: Measurement, Maps and plans, and Probability.
Future Careers in Mathematical Literacy with a Matric Certificate
With your matric certificate, you can choose from these courses at a tertiary institution: Social Work, Psychology, Criminology, Mathematical Literacy Teacher, and Journalist.
